Chapter Ten

Hunter dropper her in front of her portable that morning, and at lunchtime he appeared with two huge bags stuffed with hamburgers and fries and shakes for her and the kids.

Over stimulated, Kevin couldn't settle down to eat, so Hunter took the other kids outside and played ball with them while Carrie helped the autistic child with his food.

He was waiting when school was over, and instead of feeling hemmed in and trapped as she'd thought she would, Carrie felt only pleasure at seeing his blue Jeep parked in the lot, and Hunter lounging behind the wheel reading a Stephen King novel from her bookcase.

“This is scary stuff. I'd never sleep if I read much of this,” he commented, taking her bags from her and stowing them in the back of the Jeep. “Wanna go for a run? I brought your shorts and jersey and headband, they were hanging on the back of the bathroom door. And I found your track shoes, too.”

So they jogged together in the park, and then they showered at the park facilities and went out for pizza. Carrie told him she had work to do, so he drove them home right afterward.

Hunter watched football, the sound turned low so it wouldn't disturb her, while she toiled over the reports that were overdue.

He was easy to be with. He respected her privacy and didn't interrupt when she needed to work. She was intensely aware of him, however, slouched in her armchair just across the room, big and male and utterly sexy in his black cotton track pants and tight-fitting T-shirt. His feet were bare. He always took his shoes off the moment he stepped inside the door.

The apartment was noticeably more tidy than usual; at some point during the day, he'd vacuumed, put her books in order on the shelves, scrubbed the kitchen. The surfaces had been dusted, and the bathroom was gleaming.

She finished David's assessment and started on Matthew's. Halfway through, she realized she was so sleepy the words on the page were blurring. She yawned and looked over at Hunter, and at that instant he glanced up and caught her watching him.

I desire you, Hunter O'Reilly. A sudden wave of need flooded her, hot and urgent and almost violent, and she knew by the look on his face, the rapt expression in his eyes, that he knew, he sensed her need and shared it.

Her weariness fled.

Like a bolt of electricity, their mutual awareness shot like blue flame across the softly lighted room.

Holding her gaze, Hunter got slowly to his feet, as graceful as a panther, and came toward her.

With trembling hands she closed the notebook she'd been writing in and got unsteadily to her feet. She wanted him to hold her, she wanted to drown in his loving the way she'd done the night before.

He drew her into his arms and kissed her.

“You feel so right, Carrie, so good”

She looked up into his amber eyes and whispered, “Let's go to bed, Hunter.”

He swept
